Charlie is a waiter in a cheap cabaret, where he knocks obnoxious customers over the head. While on a break walking his dog he meets Mabel (Normand), saves her from a robber and tells a little lie that he is actually a bigwig. A real Cinderella story develops whose climax is an old fashioned pie-throwings fight.
